Plate VII — Hierarchy
Axiom
Complexity becomes navigable only through layering.
Invariant
- Hierarchy reduces processing load by ordering relevance.
- Healthy hierarchies clarify; pathological hierarchies constrain.
- Every layer inherits constraints from the layer above.
Hierarchy is layered organization: levels of abstraction that allow complex systems to be navigated.
Good hierarchy reduces cognitive load: it tells you what matters now, what matters later, and what never matters.
Bad hierarchy is tyranny of structure—layers that exist to defend the layer, not to clarify the system.
